Work Package 3

Marine invasive alien species’ selection, data collection for mapping

Duration months: 2-48

Objectives

Overall, more than 1000 non-indigenous species (NIS) are found in the European Seas, with a small proportion being invasive (Invasive Alien Species – IAS). Within the VALIAS project, a set of 6 IAS was a-priori selected, based on their invasion status, abundance and existing knowledge, to be explored for potential use in the food, feed and cosmetic industry. Those are: the red harpoon weed (Asparagopsis armata), the slipper limpet (Crepidula fornicata), the silvercheeked toadfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus), the rabbitfishes (Siganus spp.), the cornetfish (Fistularia commersonii), and long-spined sea urchin (Diadema setosum). In this WP, (a) additional species that might also be of interest will be defined, (b) the existing information on all species, in terms of presence (distribution), abundance, biology, ecology, toxicity and uses (i.e., as fresh food, in food and feed industry) will be explored.
